Founder of BioNat

Prof Ashraf A Khalil holds a position of professor at Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (GEBRI), City of Scientific Research (SRTA-City) located in Bourg Elarab, Egypt. In 2000, he obtained his PhD degree from Cairo University in Microbial Biotechnology in cooperation with Lund University, Sweden. Afterwards, he got postdoctoral trainings at Dept of Biotechnology, Dept of Developmental Biology, Dept of Protein Chemistry and Dept of Neurosurgery. All were at Lund University, Sweden. In 2004, he carried out his 2nd Master study in Biomedicine at the University of Lund’s Faculty of Medicine in order to gain a strong foundation in molecular biology techniques.

In 2008, he came back Egypt and built his own team in GEBRI and supervised many biotechnological-oriented studies, including disease biomarkers, natural products, bioactive proteins and proteomics. Other studies focus on in vitro and in vivo activities of selected natural products and/or bioactive compounds against human diseases and subchronic toxicity. In addition, he is interested in the relation between oxidative stresses and disease development, progression and prognosis. And also he has good experience related to bioinformatics and proteomics such as sequence databases & analysis, graphical visualization of 3D structure, protein structure prediction, protein homology modeling, protein fold recognition, expression analysis and two-dimensional image analysis.

Along his career Prof Khalil published more than 55 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He is a member of the editorial board of some peer-reviewed journals such as World Journal of Clinical Oncology, World Journal of Methodology and African Journal of Biochemistry Research. Khalil is a fellow of European Organization for Molecular Biology (EMBO) and American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). Prof Khalil is the founder of Euro-Mediterranean Association of Life Sciences (EMALS). EMALS aims to be a recognized World Forum for the dissemination and discussion of the cutting-edge breakthrough in Life and Biological Sciences. EMALS initiated a series of conferences called International Euro-Mediterranean Conferences of Natural Products and Pharma (BioNat) which were held eight times successfully, in which Prof Khalil was the key leader. The 9th BioNat will be held in Egypt; 2025.
